Most of these radio commercials were written, produced and narrated by Ray Welch. Some of them (notably the spots for Store 24 and Bella Sante Spas) were co-written by my erstwhile partner Geoff Currier; and most of them suffered the editing and judgment calls of my wife and fellow copywriter, Gail Welchtwo of the best creative people I've ever worked with. There are a few that feature other announcers (Myron the Greek, Mad River Traders, etc…). If you want their names, email me. The reasons I so often cast myself as the announcer
are: Many of these commercials can be revised and re-recorded to suit clients outside the marketing areas of the original advertisers, at a less-outrageous rate than usual. If you're a fan of tasteless humor, listen to the campaign for Mad River Traders, which brought them enough attention to be bought by Coke. For a rare glimpse of me trying to be serious, please sample the Titanic spots. For campaigns still being aired in the Boston market, try Wayland Golf and Bella Sante Spas. I like the spots as well as the clients. You'll notice that Spot #45 says ORSON WELLES. This is a bootleg copy of a mix-to-pix session with Orson reading to the video of commercials for some English frozen-food company. The audio engineer left the tape running during the session while the agency brain trust helped Mr. Welles interpret the copy. The guy at the console then sent an excerpt of out-takes to someone else, who sent it to someone else who, a hundred years later, sent it to Sonny Dufault (whose studio recorded the audiobook of Copywriter), who handed it to me after a session. Me, I keep a tight lid on it.
